(author's note: because I didn't have internet for the first week or
so, I wrote up these entries and am posting them all at once. However,
I'm resetting the date, so when I look back, I'll have a somewhat
accurate timeline. So if the date looks off to you, don't worry -- I did
that on purpose. :D)
Today, after we took the bitties to school, Anne’s mother Frau Voigt and I went shopping in the city center for a toaster. Lily left me at a bookstore – buchandlung – while she went to the appliance store, and I was for a short time, completely in my comfort zone. Sure, the English book section was small, but that’s only because the entire store was more than five floors. I was in heaven. I wandered the whole place – learned that stricken is to knit and häkeln is to crochet – and found a glorious collection of Doctor Who short stories (one for each Doctor up through Eleven) that I desperately want to read. Maybe when I have Internet access I’ll see if I can get an ebook of it.
Frau Voigt speaks about as much English as I do German –
maybe a bit more – so we had a grand time trying to have a conversation. She
taught me a boatload of new words, like Ompel
for stoplight and Fahrenrat for bike,
and we finally settled on this hybrid language of English and German that we
managed to muddle through with. She’s a very patient teacher and, though I fear
she thinks I’m a bit dim, we get along fairly well.
We came home, had a bit of Mittagessen (lunch – mit = middle, tag = day, essen = to eat) and
then Frau Voigt took a nap and I decided to try reading John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars, since it’s been
such a big deal. My opinion? Meh. It was too much like it was trying to be a Great Book. It wasn’t a
terrible story, and the snarky tone was fabulous,
but overall the whole thing just felt pretentious.
Then it was time to gehen
mit Frau Voigt to get die Kinder
and dinner (Abendessen). The bitties were
really tired, especially after we took them to a park for an hour or so, and
both went to bed pretty easy tonight.
And then, here I am, trying to type this up before my laptop
battery dies. It doesn’t seem to be charging from my converter – my Kindle charges
just fine, but the laptop isn’t so good. I’ll have to look into finding a new
cord or something. We’ll see.
Goodnight! Er… Guten
nacht!
